Along with the joint preparation and cement application, a proper understanding of solvent cement is important in order to make successful leak-proof joints for a longer-lasting connection in plumbing systems. This article will equip you with the necessary information for securing pipe connections.
Prepping the Surface
Applying solvent cement demands having cleaned surfaces, free of moisture and dirt. Wipe the surfaces clean of any dirt and water using a dry, clean cloth. The surfaces of the pipe and fittings should be sanded continuously to improve adhesion.
Types of Cement
CPVC solvent cement is used for joining Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride Pipes and is mostly used in hot and cold water systems. These two components chemically bond and can tolerate high temperatures and pressures. Conversely, UPVC solvent cement is used for PolyVinyl Chloride pipes that are largely installed for drainage and waste systems.
Means of Application
The cement should be applied evenly with an applicator brush. One needs to be quick on it because it sets quite fast. Apply thin coats on the pipe and fitting. The coat should be thin, about 5 inches, on all the sides.
Incubation
After application, the pipe is pushed immediately inside the fitting and given a quarter-turn twist. The twist is intended to distribute cement evenly over the surfaces. Hold the joint steady for about half a minute and avoid any movement while the cement is initially set. Do not disturb the joint for 15 minutes after putting the cement.
Cure Times
According to general guidelines, the curing duration for the initial set is between 15 minutes to 2 hours; maximum strength curing will take usually 24 hours. This may vary depending on pipe size, temperature, and humidity.
Safety consideration
Work should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. It is better to wear proper gloves and eye protection. Keep the cement away from heat sources and open flames.
Quality Products
For professional results one must use good-quality products. APL Apollo provides a complete range of solvent cements used for diverse applications. CPVC and UPVC solvent cement are available from 25ml tubes, 59ml tin, 118ml tin, 237ml tin, 473ml, and 946ml tins.
They also supply PVC solvent cement from 25ml tube, 50ml tin, 100ml tin, 250ml tin, 500ml tin, 1000ml tin, and 5000ml tin. Apart from these, PVC solvent cement (plastic bottles) is also available from 50ml to 5000ml, thus allowing for various project needs.
